Boyce Class Updates - Spring 1
Reading

Boyce Class class have really enjoyed reading Viking Boy by Tony Bradman.
The story follows Gunnar, a young Viking whose village is attacked by the warrior Skuli. After his father is killed, Gunnar escapes and begins a dangerous journey to find safety and justice. Along the way, he meets new friends, learns important skills, and discovers the truth about his family.
In the end, Gunnar must face Skuli in a final battle.
Writing

Our class has had a hilarious time writing their own “How to Be a Teacher” guides!
The children have been carefully studying the teachers in our school - rather like wildlife experts observing rare creatures in their natural habitat. They noticed important behaviours, such as the Speedy Coffee Dash, the Endless Paper Marking Shuffle, and the Legendary Teacher Look that can silence a whole room in seconds.
Using these discoveries, the children wrote brilliantly funny instructions on how to survive a school day as a teacher. From remembering where you put your whiteboard pen (again), to pretending you definitely didn’t just trip over a chair, their guides were full of imagination and humour.
It’s been a fantastic and very entertaining way to explore instructional writing—while giving our teachers a good laugh too!
Geography

Our class has been learning about the impact of farming on our environment—and we’ve discovered a lot, linking this to our school value of INTEGRITY!
We looked at things like global warming, livestock, crops, food miles, Fairtrade and even sustainable palm oil. The children especially enjoyed realising that their food has travelled farther than they have, and that cows might be slightly responsible for warming the planet (adorable but suspicious).
Overall, the class had great fun becoming “eco‑experts” and learning how small choices can help protect our world.
Extra Curriculuar!

Is Technology Helping or Hurting the Planet?
Children from Boyce Class visited Yeovil Town Football Club to share their ideas on this important question. They listened to presentations from other schools, gathered new viewpoints, and then confidently contributed their own thoughts. Their ideas were thoughtful, creative and impressed everyone who attended.
The children also explored how technology is used in different careers, learning how it can help people work more efficiently and protect the environment in surprising ways. One of the highlights of the day was getting to fly drones, which the children found exciting and inspiring.
It was a fantastic experience that encouraged the class to think carefully about the future of our planet and the role technology plays in shaping it.
Additional Learning Tools!
Homework - This is set on ATOM learning. Please use the link Atom Learning to log in. The children all have their log in details. All homework is set on a Monday and due the following Monday.
As part of our commitment to fostering a love of learning, we have set some clear homework expectations. Each week, Maths homework will be assigned on a Monday and is due back by Friday. We also encourage children to play Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) three times weekly to boost their skills. Daily reading, either independently or with a parent, is essential for developing literacy. Additionally, spellings will be sent home every Monday, with a test taking place on Friday. The more engaged your child is with home-learning, the greater progress they will make throughout the year. Your support is invaluable to their success!
On Tuesdays, all children partake in PE. Please ensure they wear the correct kit (plain white t-shirt, black shorts or joggers) and trainers. Don’t forget a water bottle!
