Reading
Reading has continued to be a huge part of our learning journey this year and the children have shown fantastic enthusiasm and independence in their choices. Our reading groups have become a firm favourite in Ho Yen, with pupils selecting books based on their own interests and discussing them with real excitement.
Reading Groups in action - Child Led - Reading for Pleasure

We have explored a wide range of texts—from adventurous page‑turners to laugh‑out‑loud stories and thought‑provoking non‑fiction. What has been especially wonderful is seeing the children recommend books to one another, building confidence and fostering a genuine love of reading.
Every afternoon, our reading discussion time has brought the classroom to life. The children have shared predictions, explored characters, debated ideas, and celebrated new vocabulary. These conversations have helped them deepen their understanding while also building communication skills.
The children have said that one of the best things about reading at St Michael’s is that they feel involved in what they learn, valued for their opinions, and encouraged to explore texts they enjoy. This sense of ownership has made a noticeable difference—engagement is high, and the children look forward to reading every day.
Below you will find some snapshots capturing our reading journey this term.
Reading & Homelearning!
Children are expected to complete assignments on our online reading platform, Reading Plus:
Pupils are given allocated time in school each week to complete their tasks, but many choose to continue their learning at home as well. We kindly ask parents to support and encourage this engagement. Login details are available from the class teacher at any time.
In addition to Reading Plus, we expect children to read a book both at home and in school. Reading boosts creativity, imagination, and oracy, and is an essential part of developing confident, enthusiastic learners. Children in Year 6 may read independently at home if they wish.
At St Michael’s, we do not use reading journals, as we feel they can add unnecessary pressure for families. Instead, we value meaningful conversations about books in class. Our pupils love sharing what they are reading, and these discussions help us to celebrate their reading journey together.
Please keep your child’s teacher updated if you discover a brilliant book at home—we’d love to hear about it! You may even find it added to our school library following your recommendation.
