Maths in Year 6

Maths in Year 6 is fun, creative and rewarding. The children work incredibly hard throughout the year, and they truly reap the benefits by the end of the academic year. SATs form an important part of the learning journey, but they are simply the culmination of everything the children have been building towards since they first started school. The challenge is great—but progress is rapid, meaningful and celebrated every step of the way.

Autumn 1 – Place Value, Addition & Subtraction

We begin the year by revisiting Place Value (up to 7 digits), ensuring pupils have a secure understanding of number size, rounding, ordering and representation.
We then build fluency, problem‑solving and reasoning skills through addition and subtraction, helping pupils develop confidence and accuracy when working with larger numbers.

Autumn 2 – Multiplication & Division

Next, we move onto multiplication and division, linking new concepts to all the skills previously learned. Pupils practise formal written methods, apply strategies to increasingly complex problems, and learn how number relationships support efficient calculation.
Every connection made strengthens mathematical understanding and makes the learning journey smoother.

Spring 1 – Fractions Mastery

Fractions form a major focus of Year 6. Building on prior knowledge, children use their rapid recall skills to simplify fractions, convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions, and confidently add and subtract fractions with different denominators.
This is often a favourite unit, allowing pupils to see just how far they’ve come.
