Literacy

Autumn 1

During Autumn 1, we have been focusing on grammar and learning new skills to improve the quality of our writing. Building these foundations has helped us boost our confidence, develop our creativity, and apply our new knowledge with growing independence.

We have particularly enjoyed using Grammarsaurus songs to help us embed key terminology. The catchy tunes and fun lyrics have made learning grammar memorable and enjoyable, and the children are now confidently identifying and using a wide range of grammatical features in their writing.

As our understanding has grown, so has our enthusiasm. We’ve experimented with ambitious vocabulary, crafted more complex sentences, and started to structure our ideas with greater precision. It has been wonderful to see pupils challenging themselves, collaborating with classmates, and taking real pride in their work.

Autumn 1 has been a fantastic start to our writing journey this year—full of progress, laughter, and a growing love of language.

Autumn 2

During Autumn 2, we worked hard to put all of our grammar practice into action—applying the skills we had developed earlier in the year. It has been wonderful to see pupils using ambitious vocabulary, varied sentence structures, and imaginative ideas with growing confidence.

We produced adventure stories, filled with tension, atmosphere, and exciting twists, as well as poetry, where pupils explored rhythm, emotion, and vivid imagery. Alongside these, the children created many other pieces of writing that showcased their developing independence and flair.

However, our favourite topic by far was writing about the Christmas Elves. After watching a fantastic video, our imaginations ran wild! The children created hilarious, mischievous and heart‑warming stories that quickly became the highlight of our day. The excitement in the classroom was infectious, and each story brought something unique and magical.

Watch this space… our stories will go live soon!

Autumn 2 has been a joyful, creative and productive term, and the children should feel incredibly proud of how far they have come.

Spring 1

This term, the children have been perfecting both their fiction and non‑fiction writing styles, showcasing maturity, humour and a real flair for creativity.

Using the wordless video Roads End, the children developed their own mystery stories, learning how to craft suspense and keep a reader on the edge of their seat. They explored techniques such as subtle clues, dramatic pauses, hints of danger and atmospheric description—all of which helped them develop a strong understanding of how to grip an audience.

Furthermore, the children have shaken the teaching community with their hilarious Non‑Chronological Reports titled “How to Be a Teacher.” Their light‑hearted honesty, playful humour and imaginative exaggeration created a wonderful working atmosphere. The classroom was full of laughter as the children reflected—quite cheekily—on the skills, patience and superpowers they believe teachers need!

What a giggle we have had!
Their enthusiasm and confidence shone through in every piece.

Below are some examples of the children’s double‑page spreads, celebrating their hard work and creativity.
