Literacy
📝 The Industrial Revolution
In English, we have been learning about the Industrial Revolution, exploring how this period changed Britain and people’s everyday lives. The children researched factories, child labour, working conditions, and transport developments.
They used this information to create a two‑page informational spread, where they combined factual writing, clear headings, diagrams, and illustrations. This project encouraged independent research, organisation of ideas, and pride in presentation.
Maths
âž— Time and Recapping
In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of time, focusing on reading analogue and digital clocks accurately. We practised telling the time to the hour, half past, quarter past, quarter to and explored how to calculate durations between times. This has really helped to build confidence with real‑life problem solving.
Alongside this, we revisited and strengthened our core arithmetic skills by recapping:
- Place value, including understanding the value of digits in larger numbers
- Addition and subtraction, using both mental strategies and written methods
- Multiplication and division, reinforcing times tables knowledge and applying it to word problems
These revision sessions helped secure key skills and ensured pupils could explain their mathematical thinking clearly.
Science
🔊 Sound
This term, we began our new Science topic on Sound. The children eagerly explored how sound is made, travels, and is heard. They conducted investigations to discover where the noisiest places in school are, learning how to observe and record results.
A highlight was experimenting with cup phones, which helped pupils understand how vibrations travel through different materials. The children asked thoughtful questions and began using scientific vocabulary confidently during discussions.
Reading
đź“– James and the Giant Peach
Our class text this term has been James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. The children have been completely engaged by the imaginative storyline, humour, and memorable characters.
Through this text, we:
- Practised reading comprehension, answering questions using evidence from the text
- Explored characters’ thoughts and feelings
- Created illustrated scenes to show key moments from the story
These activities helped deepen understanding while encouraging creativity and discussion.
